About
During the Fall of 2012, students from Dr.Hatem Bazian's Asian American Studies Course 128AC: 'Muslims in America' at the University of California, Berkeley and Zaytuna College along with various organizations and community volunteers, participated in a Bay Area wide survey of Muslims. Data was elicited from 1,108 Muslim respondents through a survey, combined with in depth interviews and focus groups. The first of its kind benchmark study on Muslims in the Bay Area, included groundbreaking data on its demographics, sense of identity, economic well-being, political and civil engagement and the challenges faced by the communities. In May of 2013, The Bay Area Muslim Study: Establishing Identity and Community was released nationwide to the public.
During the Fall of 2013, Dr.Bazian's students expanded upon the study by collecting data on the infrastructure, neighborhoods, projects, stories and struggles of the various Bay Area Muslim communities. By returning to the neighborhoods, places of worship and institutions Muslims in the Bay Area frequent, students will collaborate and collect information, images, history and narratives of this group. A website will be created for each location to house the findings and this website will serve as a collective hub to provide a more in depth and accurate view of the estimated 250,000 Muslims within the Bay Area.
